Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative talents as a child due to her aunt Denise. Her aunt worked in the evening shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater in the daytime. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used to engage people. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself via the medium of art. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her youth, however she was able to spend summers with her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her summers in Selma and decided to make an documentary on King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was a college student when she became attracted to the field of production for broadcast journalism. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one of the members of the jury and examine their junk. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in small production studios right out of high school. The year 1999 was the time she established her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
